How did TikTok come about?
TikTok, known as Douyin in China, is a video-sharing social network service owned by a Chinese company, ByteDance.
It has been used to create different types of videos - short dance to comedy to "educational videos" with durations ranging from 15 seconds to three minutes.
TikTok did not start as we know it today. The parent company,ByteDancecreated Douyin for the Chinese public.
After a while, TikTok was created to allow more people outside of the Chinese environment to use the features of the Douyin app.
Then, in 2018, the magic happened. TikTok merged with Musical.ly, a music platform, and that was the beginning of its dominance.
So TikTok users started creating content like videos or images merged with music. And today, the TikTok app has been downloaded more than 2 billion times.
In addition to the social aspect, there is the business side of TikTok. And that's what we're getting into.
Why you should use TikTok for your business.
If you're wondering if you should use TikTok for your business, I'll help you make that decision.
Last year, 2020, TikTok reached 80 million monthly active users, making it more visible than other social channels such as LinkedIn or Twitter.
It will also interest you to know that TikTok users spend at least as much time asInstagramand Facebook users.
This means that customer mindshare is almost the same, if not more, for businesses on TikTok.
While so many think it's an app for GenZ, most of whom are teenagers, several global brands are using TikTok to connect and build their fan base, which also includes adults.
One reason for this is that the app is simple and exciting to operate. People with little or no technical skills can grab an iPhone or Android and create enticing, high-engagement content. And if this engagement is focused on a product, it's more money.
As the app is still gaining momentum, it is not as saturated as otherssocial media-platforms. This means that the faster a brand enters, the easier it is to gain visibility and influence.
For example, a post on Facebook or Instagram has lower engagement than on TikTok. There will come a time when it will subside. But not now.
If this app has such potential reach, how can a business benefit from TikTok?
The following sections of this post will discuss this in detail.
Can you advertise on TikTok?
Of course you can. Some people are skeptical about the ability to display ads on TikTok since it was not available before.
Changes have been made to introduce this feature with TikTok Ads Manager. Apart from the basic types of ads available now, which we will discuss, ByteDance is testing some ideas with certain brands and influencers to see the effectiveness.

Connect with your audience
It is important to understand that in order to use a social media platform effectively, you need to understand how the platform works.
For example, Instagram thrives on videos and images. Twitter, on text. TikTok, a mix of videos or images with sounds that match the content.
Among other reasons, the platform is a home for young people. More than half of the users ofTikTok usersare between 10 and 29 years old.
To interact with them, observe the type of content they consume. If it is not present, your ads will not be effective.
So it is important to learn how to connect with your audience. Start creating simple content from now. As you do, you begin to get involved.
If you have, let's get into the main deal, which is how you can use TikTok Ads Manager to create ads for your business.
Create your campaign
On TikTok, you use the TikTok ad manager to create ads. You start this by creating a TikTok Ads Manager account.
So how do you get started?
Create an account
VisitTikTok Ads Home Pageand click the "Get started" button.
Next, select your billing country or territory, then choose whether you're using the account for a business or an individual. Then click "Next".
This will take you to the step where you will find some basic information such as your email address and password. Once you've done this, you'll receive a verification code on your email or phone if you're on mobile. And it is used to verify your account.
The next step is to confirm that you agree to the terms and conditions and then click "Sign Up".
After a while and your brand has been approved, you can log into your dashboard to complete the installation. Then you can follow the steps below to create your TikTok ad.
Create an ad campaign
Here you must create an advertising campaign under the 'Campaigns' tab. Then click the "Create" button.
You will then be asked to select the goal of your campaign: to drive traffic, conversions or app installs.
You then name your campaign and set a minimum campaign-level budget. Remember that setting up a lifetime budget (which can be changed) will help you reach as many people as possible quickly.
Configure the ad group.
At this point, you choose where your TikTok ad will appear.
If you choose automatic placement, your ads will appear on all TikTok partner apps. While the “Choose Placement” option allows you to manually choose which of the partner apps you want your ads to appear on.
Other changes can then be made based on demographics, including location, gender, age group, language and interest category.
You can also target the audience using engagement, app activity andwebsite traffic.
Create a new ad
You're done with the ad group, so it's time to create your first ad.
In TikTok Ad Manager, you have the option to upload an image or video as your ad. But don't forget TikTok's recommendations for their ads. It will help create more engaging content for you.
Once you've created the content, you'll have the option to review the ads to make sure you've created them correctly. You can choose to give the ad a name that appears as text above the ad.
One of the most important elements that most people miss is a call-to-action button. This is what you want your audience to do when they see your ad. These may include "Learn more", "Download now", "Order now", "Buy now".
When you're done, you can click "Submit" to finish creating your ad.
Measure your ad effectiveness
The job has just started after the launch of your ad. You have to measure yourselfTikTok ad performanceto see how the campaign is paying off. There are built-in analytics that can show you how your ad is performing in terms of impressions, clicks, conversions and more.
While doing this, I suggest you get some inspiration from the TikTok inspiration section (link). Use high-resolution images and videos with catchy titles. Focus on one call to action. Then test different styles and settle for the best performing one.
Types of sponsored ads
On TikTok, there are several options for displaying sponsored ads. I will name them and explain each one.
The first is…
Users see these types of TikTok ads when browsing theirFYP (TO YOUR SIDE)on the platform. The duration can be up to 60 seconds long, although TikTok recommends 9 to 15 seconds for an Infeed ad.
Users can interact with them by liking, commenting or sharing them. It can also be skipped. It will appear as a full screen view.
When using Infeed ads, be sure to include an attachmentcall to actionbutton that links to a landing page if you want to take advantage of this ad style, otherwise your marketing won't do much.
Branded Hashtag Challenge
Using this type allows advertisers to get more engagement, mainly because it inspires users to create their content. You see them ashashtag challengesthat appears at the top of TikTok's Discover page.
The process goes like this: Users click on the branded hashtag challenge ad...the user is taken to a Brand Challenge page with a description of the challenge, the brand logo and a link to the brand's website. Users create their TikTok content based on your challenge using your hashtag
I love the way e.l.f cosmetics used this style to create the #eyeslipsface challenge. TikTok users had to show their natural beauty using the song "Eyes.Lips.Face".
for a chance to win $250 worth of e.l.f. Cosmetics, makeup and skin care products. That campaign got 5 million users and 6 billion views. Yes, 6 billion.
You cansee an example of this where TikTok promoted their podcast FOR YOU. Brand takeover ads on Tiktok are full-screen ads that appear on FYP as soon as a user opens the app.
It is a 3 to 5 second video or a 3 second photo. Like the one mentioned earlier, be sure to use it to direct users to a goal, such as aHashtag challengeor landing page. Since users only see one Branded Takeover ad each day, there is less competition.
TikTok used this ad type to promote its "For You" podcast. Clicking on it will redirect users to the pages of the influencers featured in the ad.
See ads above
These are video format ads that appear in full screen with audio and autoplay for 60 seconds and appear immediately after the user opens the TikTok app. Never forget to add a call-to-action button to the ad.
If you are familiar with Snapchat and Instagram, this will be easier. Here you can decide to create shareable stickers, filters and special effects on TikTok to promote yourself. Sometimes you see people andbrands mix this with other advertising.
The effect is strong because it is popular among TikTok users, which means more engagement.
Thanks to PUMA's #flashoffuture campaign on TikTok. It is a perfect example.
collaboration with influencers
You can combine any of the listed ads with this category. The strength of this is that it already has an existing audienceinfluence from the influencer.
All you have to do is check if their niche matches yours. If yes, just continue.
Are TikTok ads expensive and worth it?
If this is a question on your mind, then let me help you understand whether TIKTOK is the best app for your ads or not?
The bigger brands like Nike and Disney advertise on TikTok because of the huge engagement there. Somehow running TikTok ads can be expensive for small businesses. The minimum budget to run a campaign on TikTok is $500.
You can reach a diverse audience through TikTok ads - between the ages of 10 and 24... the older generation is also coming in to enjoy the benefit of the app.
TikTok is the most popular place for itinfluencer-marketingmuch better than Facebook and Instagram.
Within days, your brand can go viral with simple and engaging content.
TikTok users spend more time on the app, and that means greater reach for advertisers.
On TikTok, authenticity is celebrated more than any other platform. This authenticity makes it easier to build trust with your audience.
If you research social media trends, you will see that video is the future. And users are drawn to a platform that gives them the flexibility to easily create what they want.
This experience is what TikTok offers its users. You might as well join the bandwagon because that number is growing exponentially.
