ANFIELD, LIVERPOOL - Liverpool and Chelsea failed to improve their poor Premier League position when they played out a 0-0 draw at Anfield.
There were few real chances for either side in a low-quality game that showed exactly why both are firmly entrenched in midfield.
Chelsea debutant Mykhailo Mudryk was a rare bright spot, threatening the Reds defense with his pace and inventiveness during a second-half cameo.
Ultimately, however, both coaches had to reflect on a point that does not favor their quest for a top-four spot.

Mudryk gives Chelsea hope of improvement
With all the negativity surrounding these two teams this season, Chelsea can at least hold on to the hope that their ongoing spending spree can bring about a sudden improvement.
Mudryk's second-half appearance from the bench here certainly suggested the Ukrainian was plaguing Liverpool's defense in his short tenure on the pitch.
If their joint signings can have a similar impact going forward, it's not hard to see things coming together for Graham Potter's side pretty quickly.
In fact, a late Champions League push could even be within reach.

Liverpool may need to be patient
Unfortunately for Liverpool, it looks far less likely that they will be able to turn their fortunes around quickly.
The club remains adamant that there will be no more big money signings following the signing of Cody Gakpo in January.
And if that's really the case, it's unlikely to get better until the front-line injury issues abruptly subside.
The Reds desperately need Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz back to give them enough guts to win games on a regular basis and that's not going to happen anytime soon.

Solidity a foundation on which to build
All is not lost for Jurgen Klopp's side, however, as a rare goal conceded in the game at least offers reason for optimism.
It was the Reds' first Premier League shutout in nine games and their second in as many games in all competitions after holding off Wolves last time out.
Things may not go well at the top, but preventing your opponent from scoring is a good place to start for any team looking to turn their form around.
Liverpool vs Chelsea live as it happened, summary
FINAL:Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea
FULL TIME:Anywhere at Anfield and it ends with both sides getting a point. It has to be said that given the real lack of quality on display, it probably deserves it.
90. Minutes (+3):Núñez thinks he has a chance to win when Fabinho's deflected shot lands on him, but the flag is up and Azpilicueta made the block anyway.
90. Minutes:Five minutes to add.
87. Minutes:Henderson is minimized by Núñez, but Azpilicueta is in the right place at the right time to head the cross.
80. Minutes:Liverpool shake things up again with Jones, Henderson and Fabinho replacing Gakpo, Elliott and Bajcetic.
Chelsea, meanwhile, traded Havertz, Chalobah and Mount for Chukwuemeka, Azpilicueta and Aubameyang.
76. Minutes:Núñez isolates Thiago Silva in a one-on-one match and gains speed on the outside, but his well-placed left foot goes straight to Kepa.
72. Minutes:Milner is now heading to that yellow, with Alexander-Arnold as a backup.
The young Scouser has a great job against Mudryk, who has been pumped ever since he came in.
67. Minutes:And now Mudryk almost breaks away to the left, forcing a foul on Milner that deserves a well-deserved warning.
65. Minutes:Mudryk's brilliant feet in the box allow him to create a shot, but his attempt goes wide of the net.
It looks lively!
62. Minutes:Núñez joins Liverpool, with Keita breaking through and Elliott falling into midfield.
55. Minutes:Mykhailo Mudryk makes his Chelsea debut, entering the fray in place of Lewis Hall.
50. Minutes:Liverpool started this half brightly, boxing Chelsea and creating chances.
Finally, Keita sees a volley on goal from the penalty area before a block from a deep position saves the guests.
46. Minutes:Liverpool restart the game...and a Konate striker almost tricked Kepa into the air before deflecting inches wide! That would have been a solid start for Liverpool.
HALFTIME:The whistle blows in an even but rather weak first half of football. Chelsea had the tactical advantage in the early stages, but Liverpool have since found ways to play through the press.
45. Minutes (+1):Keita takes out Salah with beauty from the start but, unusually for him, the Egyptian misses his shot terribly.
45. Minutes:Four minutes off.
39. Minutes:Thiago escapes with a deflected shot that Kepa picks up easily but Liverpool start to improve in the last five minutes.
31 minutes:Cucurella is depressed and needs treatment, but that won't force him to quit the game.
And now Chelsea are close as Badiashile nods a direct free kick to Alisson as he had a glorious chance to score at the end of the Kop. Liverpool stay tuned.
25. Minutes:The ball falls to Gallagher on the edge of the box, but his shot is tame and easily intercepted by Alisson.
20. Minutes:Gakpo picks Hall's pocket on the edge of the box, but squashes his attempt over the top. He needed more composure.
16. Minutes:This has very quickly become a low-key, low-quality affair. Perhaps not a surprise considering they are ninth against 10th in the Premier League.
7. Minutes:Gakpo shoots after Salah hits him in the box after a ball from Bajcetic.
The Dutchman really should have done better.
3. Minutes:Chelsea believe they have taken the lead when Havertz strikes home after Thiago Silva hit a corner post.
Too bad for the visitors. Thiago had deflected into an offside position before the shot and the VAR scores the goal.
1 minute:Chelsea let us start at Anfield Road.
15 minutes after kick-off:It's freezing cold here at Anfield as the players finish their much-needed warm-up sessions. Both sides could use a fast start to fend off the cold as best they can.
30 minutes after kick-off:Trent Alexander-Arnold was only on the Liverpool bench today with a muscle problem that has prevented him from training in recent days.
45 minutes after kick-off:No sign of this protest against Liverpool owner Fenway Sports Group is rumored to have circulated on social media this week.
I just came down to watch the pregame protest that was supposed to start here at 11:30am. A testament to the total disconnect between social media and real life, if ever that was necessary.pic.twitter.com/OJ70Bms2Wo
