Wound treatment and preventionis committed to showcasing innovations that have worked for the past 5+ years. Every July, the editors present the latest news in wound care. The products are arranged alphabetically. We hope you find this information useful.

product name: ACTIGRAFT

Innovations that work! (1)ActiGraft is an FDA-cleared wound care solution that enables healthcare providers to produce in vitro blood clots from a patient's whole blood in real time. Once applied, the clot tissue serves as a protective covering and supports wound healing processes that occur naturally in the body. Statement: "I support ActiGraft because it uses the body's own healing cascade to initiate the wound healing process and plays a unique role as a topical dressing in the wound care room." — Dr. Bryan Doner, DO, D&P Medical Group

Internet side:EPIC.COM

Innovations that work! (2)Teams can extend Epic's functionality using mobile devices and app add-ons. Epic's Haiku application streamlines workflows and enables clinicians to document a patient's condition in real time. A 620-bed teaching hospital used Epic's Haiku to capture pressure ulcers (PI) present on admission and their precise anatomical location. Identification of PIs present at admission, known as community-acquired pressure ulcers (CAPIs), improves patient care by helping teams efficiently allocate scarce resources. An institution's ability to distinguish CAPI from hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPIs) affects quality improvement initiatives, liability, and reimbursement. In addition, the application streamlined the organization's incident reporting system by assisting in the timely identification of HAPIs and auto-completion of mandatory fields, reducing nursing documentation time.

Testimony: Epic's Haiku reduced nurses' hours reporting incidents by more than 2,000 hours per year.1The system also increased the rapid and accurate identification of PIs from 30% to 90%, improving compliance in identifying PIs present at admission.1,2Another important result was the identification of 210 multi-visit patients (MVPs),1enables the organization to use a multidisciplinary approach, with links to community resources, to improve the health of these vulnerable individuals.

Product name:SPEED UP

Innovations that work! (3)Expedite is a nutritional product to support wound healing. What makes it unique is that it's only a small 2-ounce serving once a day. Many of the earlier products required the patient to drink 8 to 10 ounces twice a day, making adherence to the nutritional care plan difficult. Expedite contains L-citrulline and collagen dipeptides, which stimulate fibroblast activity. L-citrulline has been proposed as a more effective alternative to increase plasma nitric oxide (NO) levels. Citrulline is first converted to arginine in the bloodstream and then to NO in the cells. Expedite has 30 times as many dipeptides as regular collagen. It is available in peach-mango flavour.

Internet side:WWW.KERECIS.COM

Innovations that work! (4)Kerecis is a skin substitute for Icelandic cod. Kerecis has indications for wound, burn and soft tissue strengthening from head to toe for full and partial thickness wounds. The gentle treatment of Kerecis allows the product to maintain its 3D structure with a porosity similar to the human dermis. This allows for faster absorption and faster cellular ingrowth. Kerecis has many other benefits including bacterial static properties, hemostatic properties, pain reduction, natural collagens, laminins and especially omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids have been clinically shown to help regulate inflammation and aid during the inflammatory stage of the wound healing cascade. Kerecis has more than 30 publications; including level 1 evidence. Some of Kerecis' level 1 evidence includes better efficacy over standard care, pig transplants and amniocentesis/chorion grafts. Kerecis has also been shown to be more cost-effective with variations in size and micrografts to facilitate patient care.

Testimony: "I was skeptical of any other collagen product, especially a 'fish product' marketed at the clinic. I found the product firm, with good adhesion after preparing the wound bed. I used the powder and draped both grafts were easy to apply and worked better than expected Resolution within 6 weeks of starting fish inoculation.—Nancy Chatham ANP-BC, CCNS, CWOCN-AP, CLT

The WearSense LS2 is robust, small and thin, with its components hermetically sealed and water resistant. The WearSense line of products can be considered for any application that requires compression control.

Innovations that work! (6)MolecuLightDX is a handheld imaging device that uses safe violet light to help professional wound care professionals detect bacteria in a wound and measure the size of the wound. The previous i:X device was already on the market, but the new DX device has the following new features that are often needed in these segments: extensive electronic medical record (EMR) integration capabilities for multiple EMR environments, patient-centric user interface and workflow for to ensure easy tracking of patients and wounds, an administrative workflow and system configuration options, and a docking system for easier charging of the device.

Innovations that work! (8)The Prevalon boot is a heel protector that supports the foot and ankle and raises the heel to completely relieve the heel. The Prevalon boot also holds the foot in place to prevent foot and leg rotation and prevent foot contractures.

Testimony: "We conducted a multicenter, single-blind RCT in critically ill patients to evaluate the effectiveness of the Prevalon boot in preventing heel pressure injuries. Results of the RCT showed that the risk of pressure ulcers in patients using the Prevalon boot was 11 times lowermore likely than patients who did not use the boot; the pressure injuries were also more severe. We found the boot easy to put on and completely relieved the patients' heels.Barakat Johnson M, Lai M, Stephenson J, et al.
